Dear Parents, Guardians and Community Members,
When regulations were put into place in schools to deal with the ‘Working with Children’ legislation, many people commented that it was rather ‘heavy handed’. The old requirements made it difficult for non biological parents and grandparents to help out in the school and spend time supporting and interacting with family members in an education setting, some of these rulings have been reconsidered. Where non biological parents/grandparents or special visitors (i.e. Firefighters, Ambulance Officers, Police Officers usually coming in on an incursion for one to two hours maximum), wish to assist within the school, they may do so on ‘five’ occasions during the year. To enable the school to have some control over appropriate family members coming into and assisting in the school, these people need to be listed as ‘Emergency Contacts’ on your child’s enrolment documentation. I know that these small changes will make it easier for teachers to arrange incursions, and in extended families, grandparents can once again easily take an active role in their grandchild’s education. In the latest Department of Education and Training (DET) Policy on ‘Visitors in Schools’ it has tightened a great deal on all visitors to the school site, including all parents. Where parents are dropping off and picking up students at the start and end of the day, when picking up sick students or when picking up/dropping off students for PEAC, they are not expected to sign on in the Visitor’s Book. If parents attend the school for any other purpose (meetings with staff, assist in class, attend excursions, assist in the Canteen etc.), they must sign on in the Visitor’s Book that is kept in the school’s reception/office area. For many years, all trades people, booksellers, government workers and general visitors, have had to sign on before going about their tasks. I ask that parents support us in this matter. It allows us to have a tighter control on who is on school property and allows us to ensure the safety of the children. Over the last two weeks, the press has contained
a number of positive articles about how well school canteens have dealt
with legislation that outlines what foods can and can not be sold to children.
When this legislation was put in place, our school canteen was quick to
adopt the changes and put in place a menu that more than met the requirements.
School menus continue to be monitored to ensure compliance. Recently,
the canteen has had numerous requests to remove items from a menu selection,
i.e. “I would like the lettuce removed from the hamburger”. This
can not be done, it is the salad in that burger that makes it ‘green’ or
acceptable for the menu. Removing items from the burger means that
it must be removed from the menu. On the menu there are items that
are available on only Monday and Friday, they again, for compliance reasons,
can only be ordered on these days. Where the Canteen Manager has
to negotiate changes for wrong orders, it can often cause distress for
the child. Please try to ensure that you order only food that is
available on the day. For parents of Kindergarten and Pre Primary
students, you are unable to order ‘recess’ food for your children.
It is not delivered to class and the children are not able to go to the
canteen at recess and collect it, which is what the other children do.
Over the past few newsletters, I have spoken of the Building Programme that will take place. A number of parents have indicated their interest for knowing the exact locations for these. The new Kindergarten/Pre Primary building will be sited where the present junior adventure playground is. The junior playground will be moved to the area behind the library and the existing Pre Primary/Kindergarten buildings will be removed, opening up a much bigger play area for the young children. The second building will be located on the Butler Pass end of the current senior teaching block. The new teaching block will consist of a general teaching classroom and a purpose built art room, which will include multiple sinks, a large storage area and a kiln room with its own kiln, to enable pottery work to be fired. In the latest correspondence, work will commence July 2009 and be completed mid 2010. But given the number of projects the DET will have to deal with under this initiative, their estimates may require revision. Iain McIntosh
VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS Thank you very much to those parents who have already paid their voluntary contributions of $40 per child. The school relies a great deal on parents paying this voluntary payment. All the money is used within the school in learning areas to benefit the children. The school receives a limited budget and these contributions enable us to do that bit extra for the children. If you did not pay your voluntary contribution with your Student
Requirement List to Wooldridges, you are able to pay this money at the
Front Office when you are next in the school.
CLIFTON’S CORNER A new feature of the newsletter will be a short piece from ‘Clifton’, the school’s mascot and his sister ‘Hillary’. For those of you who have not met Clifton, he arrived at Clifton Hills in 2003. In recent years, he has been on holiday and has now returned to a warm welcome. Clifton will be visiting the classrooms each week to remind the students about the Values Programme and its current focus. Another part of the Values programme is that each class teacher will identify children within the class who display the value “Pursuing Personal Excellence” – either academic, behavioural or social. These children will be invited to lunch with either the deputies or principal. Next week we commence the value

MESSAGE FROM THE SCHOOL CHAPLAIN Sometimes its hard to stick up for what is right and other people, even friends try to put you down for doing the right thing. Don’t be swayed by them and stick to what you know is right thing to do. The ‘Good Book’ says… Matthew 5:11 "…..count yourselves blessed every time people put you down or throw you out or speak lies about you to discredit. What it means is that the truth is too close for comfort and they are uncomfortable. |
