ATTENDANCE
Where a child is absent from school, parents must provide a suitable reason for the absence and a written note is preferred.  Please note that the Education Act states that attendance at school is compulsory for Years 1-7.

Parents who wish for their child to leave the school grounds during the hours of instruction are to complete a form (located in the office) which is to be given to the classroom teacher prior to the child departing.  We now have an attendance register held in the office which parents also need to complete when the child departs.  (Children  going  home  for   lunch on a  regular basis  need  to  provide only  one note to cover this absence from school at lunchtime.)

The School follows Department of Education and Training guidelines by
contacting parents of students whose attendance is of concern.

ARRIVAL AT SCHOOL
Children should NOT arrive at school before 8.10am.  We request that children assemble in the undercover area before school where they will be supervised by a teacher until being directed to classes at 8.20am.

YEAR ONE, PRE-PRIMARY AND KINDERGARTEN ATTENDANCE DURING THE FIRST MONTH
In 2006, Year 1 students will attend full days from day one.  Pre Primary students will attend half days for the first two weeks, four out of five full days for Weeks three and four (Wednesday rest day).  Full attendance will commence on Week five – 27th February.

Kindergarten students will have staggered starts for the first four weeks and attend two full days from Week five.

PARENT-TEACHER INTERVIEWS

These are always encouraged.  However, for formal interviews it is preferred that the parents telephone the school and organise a mutually acceptable interview time with the teachers. Teachers should not be disrupted during hours of instruction.

 Top

SICK CHILDREN AND MEDICATION

If your child is unwell he/she should not be sent to school.  However, if well enough to attend but needs medication during the school day, parents must provide full written instructions indicating time and quantity of medication to be administered.  (Forms are available at the office.)

If the child becomes unwell at school, it is our policy to contact the parents to take the child home.  Parents are therefore requested to keep the school records of addresses and contact phone numbers up to date. If parents or emergency contacts are not available the principal may have sick children transported to a doctor or hospital at the parent’s expense.

COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSES
Community Health Nurses (Schools) from Armadale Community Health Service provide services to the school.  The nurses visit the school by arrangement and:

• Provide assistance with and monitoring of children with chronic medical conditions.
• Undertake assessments on children, with parental consent, to detect and refer on, when required, conditions adversely affecting learning.
• Participate in providing assistance to health promotion and education programs.
• Provide health related short-term advice and intervention on health related issues.
• Advocacy on health related issues when required.

The nurses can be consulted by parent/caregivers to discuss any health related issue affecting their children by contacting them via the School Office.

NEWSLETTERS
This is one of the most effective ways of communicating with parents.  Newsletters will be sent home with every child once a fortnight.  The newsletters will be numbered serially to enable parents to determine whether a newsletter has not been received.  If this is found to be the case, a copy is filed at school for your perusal.  The Term Planners will be sent home at the beginning of each Term.
NB: Newsletters can be e-mailed to parents who supply their e-mail address to the school.

Top

PARENTLINES
A Parentline is an additional means of parent/school communication.  It is used for those times when we need to update parents before or after a newsletter has gone home, for excursion and incursion information and for general communication from classrooms.  A Parentline is photocopied on green paper with the heading Parentline.
A copy of every Parentline is filed in the office, to answer any parent queries from time-to-time.

SWIMMING LESSONS
These lessons are held during school time each year for children in Pre Primary – Year 7.  In 2006, lessons will be commencing early in Term 1 for children in Years 2 – 7.  Year 1 and Pre-Primary children will have 10 lessons during Term 4.

EXCURSIONS & INCURSIONS
The policy of this school is to enable children to participate in a wide variety of educational and cultural excursions and sporting fixtures.  These are part of the school program and where selected to participate, children are expected to attend.  The cost of these excursions is kept to a minimum and will depend on distance and circumstances.  If parents prefer their child not to participate in the excursion then a note to that effect is requested.

The school also invites, from time to time, various groups to the school to complement its educational program.  These incursions are a cost effective way of enabling the students to experience music, drama, dance, etc.

NB:  Costs are listed in the Charges Schedule here.

VALUABLE ITEMS
No responsibility can be taken by the school for the protection from damage or theft of items such as expensive toys, jewellery, electronic games and equipment which children sometimes bring to school.  For this reason children are asked to leave these items at home.

BRAIN FOOD
Traditionally the eating of three good meals a day has been encouraged, however it is now being discovered, that ‘little, often and right’ is a better practice for balanced nutrition and brain-power.  Children should still eat the three traditional meals of breakfast, lunch and dinner but, if they are encouraged to regularly ‘graze’ during the day, the portions of these meals may need to be reduced.

At Clifton Hills the children are encouraged to bring a small container which can be placed on the corner of their desk.  This may contain chopped raw vegetables, fruit, nuts, grain, seeds or even small dried fish.  We have found that these are the easiest foods for the children to ‘graze’ on during class time, without causing disruption to class procedure.  We also encourage children to have a bottle of water on their desk from which they can take a drink when required (pull-top capped bottles are best for this).

Although the idea is at first a novelty to the children, they soon get used to the idea, and only eat and drink when they feel they need to.  The policy of “ABUSE IT, LOSE IT’ is understood by the children.  If a child abuses the privilege of having food and drink in the classroom then that privilege will be taken away from them.

So when your child comes home and asks if they can take ‘brain food’ to school it is hoped you will have a better understanding of what they mean.  We know you will encourage your child to participate.

LIBRARY
All children need a library bag for library borrowing.  This is to protect the books.  Books are borrowed for one week at a time and may be renewed if needed for a longer time.  To do this, the books must be brought to the library.  All children have one library period each week in which books are changed, but this may also be done at lunchtime.  The library program is mainly concerned with teaching research, information and literature skills.
If books are lost or damaged beyond repair, parents are asked to pay for the book at replacement cost.  Please do not try to repair books at home.  We would appreciate it if parents could ensure that books are looked after while at home, and also that children bring their books on library day.

Library Bags - School library bags are available at the Library or the Clothing Pool at a cost of $6.50.

Top

MONEY
Please do not give your child/children large sums of loose money to take to school.  If a child has to bring money to school for swimming lessons, bus fares, excursions etc. this money should be wrapped in a tissue and then sealed in an envelope bearing the child’s name.  Teachers collect these monies first thing in the morning.

Top

DOGS
Dogs should not be brought onto school grounds.  Dogs present a potential health problem via their faeces and many children and adults do not feel comfortable near dogs, irrespective of how well trained and how well restrained a dog may be by its owner.  Stray dogs will be removed by the Shire.

Top
ENROLMENT CARDS
If you have a change of address, telephone number or any information which needs to be updated on the enrolment card, please telephone or call in at the school and make the necessary adjustments.  It is very important that these cards carry up to date information.   NB:  This is a legal requirement under the Education Act 1999, Sections16 & 17.

HOMEWORK
Would parents please note that the school policy with regard to homework is as follows:

No formal homework will be set for children in Years 1-5.  Children in Years 6 and 7 may be set homework at the discretion of class teachers, however homework is not compulsory.

Top

BICYCLES
Racks are provided for student bicycles.  Bikes should not be ridden in the school yard or car park.  Parents are also reminded that children are not permitted by law, to “dinky” other children.  Cyclists must wear protective helmets.  Children under nine years of age should not be permitted to ride bicycles to school.  All bicycles should be secured to the bike racks by chain/padlock for security.

Top
COMPLAINTS
If you feel you have cause to complain about the school, please let the Principal know about it.  If other parents complain to you about anything to do with the school tell them to report the matter to the Principal.  No problem can be solved, if we don’t know of its existence.

The school has a communication box in the Administration office and we welcome parent and community members input on school matters.

Matters relating to classroom activities should be directed through class teachers first.

BOOK COVERING
Whenever a new exercise book or pad is issued to a student, he or she is encouraged to take it home to be covered.  If a child takes home a book to be covered and you are unable to cover it on that particular night, please ensure that the book is returned to the school the next morning, as the child may have to use it in class the next day.  It can always be taken home for covering another day.  A neatly covered book is a source of pride for any student.

CAR PARKING
The staff car park presents a potential safety hazard to young children if drivers of motor vehicles do not exercise extreme caution when entering and leaving.  Parents dropping children are asked to use the ‘Kiss and Drive’ facility off Connell Avenue.  This will avoid traffic congestion in the car park.  Where practicable children should be encouraged to walk or cycle to school.

Parents are asked to observe the “No Parking” signs on the school side of Connell Avenue in the interest of child safety. Parents parking along Butler Pass are urged to exercise caution when moving from the kerb into the traffic flow as children may be crossing between the lines of parked vehicles (please do not park in the bus bay).

The grassed reserve accessed from Blackburn Drive can be used as a car park by parents on days on which students attend school.  (Please note:  the exit gate will be locked at 3.15pm).  The Connell Avenue car park is staff parking only.   NB:  Copies of the ‘Kiss and Drive’ instructions are available at the front office.

CHILDREN’S PROPERTY
Parents are asked to mark all the children’s property clearly.  This assists in the recovery of misplaced articles, particularly of clothing.  Property that is not identified is placed in a lost property box either in the upper block of the school.  Items not claimed are handed into the P & C for resale (if school type).  Other clothing is sent to a charitable institution.

HEADLICE

• UNIFORM - Children not wearing the recommended school uniform will be sent to one of the Deputy Principals who will provide clean second hand uniforms for that child to wear for the day. (It was decided by the Council to lend school uniforms if the students come dressed in other clothing)  The student will wear the uniform home.  The uniform is to be laundered and returned to the school by the following Monday.  A note will be sent home notifying parents.

• JACKETS – As jackets will be removed when a child is inside the classroom, there is no formal outline for the style or type.  The main purpose of a jacket is to keep the children warm when they are outdoors.  However children are not to wear jackets in place of the school uniform jumper.

• HAIR – Hair on any student, that is longer than the top of the shoulder, is to be tied back at all times whilst at school.  This is an occupational and safety issue as well as a health issue.  Teachers will hold a supply of elastic bands in the classroom to enable them to enforce this aspect of the dress code.

• JEWELLERY – It is recommended that students do not wear jewellery to school.  Any jewellery that is worn must be appropriate and not endanger the child wearing the jewellery or others around that child.  If earrings are worn they must be studs and/or small sleepers.  Students will be asked to remove excessive jewellery and it will be safely stored by the class teacher till the end of the school day.

• FOOTWEAR – It is important to ensure your child has suitable footwear when at school.    For safety reasons no thongs, backless slip-ons or high-heeled shoes are permitted.  NO CHILD will be allowed to take part in any out of school activity without suitable footwear.
NB:  Beach style sandals are not suitable.

• SUN HATS – Legionnaire or broad brim hats are compulsory for outdoor school activities such as sport, physical education, recess break and lunch break, throughout all four terms.   The bottle green hats sold through the Clothing Pool are inexpensive and are the required item of clothing.

•     CHOIR UNIFORM – A unique uniform will be supplied by the school for
the choir.  This consists of:

White shirt.
Green skirt for girls (boys will wear normal school shorts).
Tie & Neck ribbons.
(To supply own black enclosed shoes, socks, hair ribbons).
